How I passed the Registered Dietitian Exam (RD exam)?

How I passed the Registered Dietitian Exam (RD exam)?

On November 19th 2014, I became an RD!!! When studying for RD exams, I would often google to find if people had shared their thoughts on preparing for the exam. I did come across a few blogs and they were definitely helpful. But I would also come across a forum which has negative thoughts on the exam, people failing it a few times, and that made me nervous (Strictly, stay away from those forums). At that time, I had told myself that when I pass the RD exam, I too shall share my experience to help fellow #RD2be’s! Here is how I studied for the exam. 1. After I passed my dietetic internsip, I took a 2-3 week break to unwind myself ( I could afford to do that as I did not have any job offers). In the meanwhile, I bought Jean Inmans manual for RD exam prep. First 2 weeks, I just went over the material to understand the different domains and the information it contains. 2. Then , I took an exam date which was 3 weeks away. This helps me take things seriously and focus. I then prepared a timetable and started studying seriously, around 6-8 hours a day. I gave 3 days to each domain (including listening to the CD and taking down notes). I would write the important stuff in my own words to assimilate the information, writing helps me remember better. I also made my own flashcards for information I would forget easily and studied the flashcards for an hour each day. 3. Once, I completed going through all the domains. I started revising the whole information, memorizing formulas and the ADA exchange list for diabetic meal planning.Next, I began solving the practice question from Jean Inman. They helped me a lot in terms of finding areas where I need to study more or have calculations I need to practice. 4. The last week, I spent going through the questions I got wrong, all calculations from Inamns manual as well as the question bank. There were quite a few calculations on my exam and knowing the formulas and exchange lists helped me answer them correctly. The information seemed a whole lot in the beginning but closer to the exam date, I started feeling prepared. 5. On the day of the exam, I was very nervous (inspite of the feeling of being prepared), if that is happening to you too, don’t worry its perfectly normal. My exam time was 5 pm in the evening. I woke up late that morning, enough sleep is essential for your brain to work and answer 125 questions in 2.5 hours. I ate an early lunch and then...

Day 6: What do you do?

Day6: Blog post challenge: If you couldn’t answer with your job, how would you answer the question, ‘what do you do’? What do I do ? The first question we ask strangers. On the surface, it seems like an ordinary question, but asking myself this question and answering it indirectly feels a little weird! Unfortunately, I make people count their calories and watch what they are eating!!! Not true. I help people eat healthy. I convince them that eating healthy is not as expensive or tough as they think. I help them stay away from deadly diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and many more. I inspire.motivate.heal through food. I help people establish a peaceful relationship with food. Currently, I am doing all this for free throguh social media. But wait, those are not the only things I do….I cook, clean, dust.  I paint whenever I find time. I blog. I learn, study and write a lot of assignments…. Have you ever asked yourself this question? My answer is simple, whatever be it, I love what I do.. How about you?...

Day 2: Educate..

Here I am on day 2 of my blog post challenge. I am going to educate you on something I know a lot about or something I am good at. Why? because that’s what the prompt for today is. Well, undoubtedly I am going to talk to you about  nutrition!! I have met countless health conscious people in my life ever-since I took up nutrition. Some well read and some not so well read. The problem with both sect of people is that, those who are well read overdo it in the name of health and fitness, and the not so well read blindly follow advice that appears in magazines, mails, newsletter, TV, ads and other social media. So, whichever sect you belong too here are few things about nutrition I would like to educate you on… 1. Eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money on buying food, neither does it mean your food is going to taste bad nor does it mean you can’t enjoy occasional treats. But, please do not make occasional treats daily food items. Cookies, cakes, pastries, chips, juices, sodas are only to be served and had in birthday parties, get together etc. It should not be your daily breakfast, snack or a dessert! 2. Eating healthy means eating local foods, foods that you have grown up eating, freshly cooked simple home-made food. For example: Dal chawal with a dollop of ghee. Surprised, I call it a healthy meal? Don’t be! I know, I know you are thinking white rice is high in glycemic index and ghee is high in saturated fat. The only good thing is the dal. But, no you are wrong. This meal is absolutely healthy and here’s why. Both dal and rice have some amount of protein, but dal lacks essential amino acid called methionine and rice lacks essential amino acid called lysine, so when eaten together they make up for each other’s deficiencies and give us a complete source of protein. Ghee on the other aids in absorption of fat soluble vitamin such as A,D,E, and K important for vital functions of life! Ghee also blunts the blood glucose response that occurs after eating white rice. This is because the high fat content coats the rice particles and your body takes longer to digest the rice,  releasing the sugar slowly and hence the blood sugar rises slowly instead of spiking! Other reasons why it is healthy is because rice and dal is available locally, your food did not travel to you from china unlike many foods. You have grown up eating dal and rice ever since you were an infant, so how can  it suddenly...

North Carolina & James Hunt Library!

North Carolina & James Hunt Library!

After we were done with museums, hiking and sightseeing in DC, we drove to North Carolina. North Carolina had lot of green spaces, tall wood drives and huge houses. Our main agenda in NC was to meet friends and family. Since my husband is an alumni of NC state university, we decided to visit his university. He took me to places where he would work as  a student, the place he lived as a student and his classrooms. What I liked the most about this university, is the new state-of-art library they recently opened. I have never seen a library so cutting edge and technological advanced as this...

What’s cooking?

When there is no school, my project keeps me busy! Being a nutritionist my project involves designing healthy reipces. It doesn’t just stop at designing or creating, I have to cook them, standardize them, determine appropriate portion size and finally taste test! Before finalizing the recipes they have to pass a specific criteria – they should be low in saturated fats, high in fiber, low in simple sugars, high in complex carbohydrates, low in sodium, taste good and look good, yes a bit of food styling to make it look mouthwatering… Here’s a sneak peak into what’s cooking in my healthy...

Just Do It.

We all know about exercise and its benefits. These days awareness about exercise is increasing and people are trying hard to find ways to incorporate exercise in their busy schedules. I am trying hard too! Not that I have a busy schedule at the moment but I am trying hard to stick to my exercise plan. I manage to work out for an hour every day. At present my goal is to be able to run for an hour at a stretch. I have managed to build up my running from 2 min to 12 minutes continuously! (This may not sound as challenging for some of you as me, but I am pretty happy about it)   As I wake up and get ready for my morning walk cum run, some random thoughts cross my mind… Huh? It’s already morning? I slept late last night so I need to get more sleep It’s pretty cold outside It’s still dark I can’t really see anyone on the road It won’t be safe My body is aching I will make up for it tomorrow by running a mile more  This happens to me a lot and may be some of you who have just started exercising. Your mind takes over your body and pulls you down from achieving your goal. Your body is able to but your mind is weak. What do you do then? Well, I’d say face it, don’t give up, fight out your mind, put on your favorite music on the i-pod and go for it!  What did I do? I pushed myself outside the house on to the street, started with a warm-up gradually increased my speed and started jogging, five minutes later all the negative thoughts escaped my mind and I started jogging with more positivity & greater stamina enjoying the cool breeze playing on my face! I could have easily given up and done my workout the next day, I did not because some days don’t go as per the plan. I then complain of not finding enough time or just give in.  In order to achieve my goal I must condition my mind and not just give up at the first hurdle, I must push myself out of the comfort zone. For a long time I was waiting for the ‘right moment’ to start exercising but soon I realized that there is nothing called as the’ right moment’. I need to Just Do It.  ...
