Last weekend we visited the Big Buddha in Kamakura, Japan. This is known as the Kamakura ‘Diabustu’- a Japanese term for giant statue of Buddha. This was built thousands of years ago (around 1250’s) and is made up of bronze. It also had a hall to house this giant sculpture of Buddha. However, the hall was destroyed in earthquake and tsunami that struck this region in 1495 but the statue was undamaged. It has sat outdoor, unsheltered from the weather, ever since! This is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Japan. The place was crowded yet very peaceful! Big Buddha’s impact is as much in the atmosphere as it radiates, hands resting, eyes closed but still in tune with everything around it; and the head bowed in the benevolent mystery of meditation.
