One of the weekends we had been to Kamakura. It is (was) a historic place just outside Yokohama. It is well known for temples and shrines. One can enjoy beautiful gardens, Buddhist inspired architecture and statuary here.We first visited the Meigetsu-in temple. According to the temple’s records, its origin dates back to 1159 when a warrior living here was killed at a battle. His son built a small temple here to console the souls of the departed father as well as other who died in the war. What also makes this temple famous is Ajisai, or hydrangeas. During the rainy season from mid-June to late July, nearly 20,000 flowers, mostly blue, are in full bloomAnother temple we visited was Tokeiji temple. It is also known as the ‘divorce temple’ as it served as a shelter for women who suffered abuse by their husbands and sought a divorce. An official divorce could be attained by staying at the temple for three years. Tokeiji temple also has graveyard of many renowned people who were famous during their era like scholars, philosophers, painters, priest’s poets and doctors. What I enjoyed the most was beautiful and meticulously tended gardens, elegantly laid-out in a natural style!
