Today is my mom’s birthday and I have been racking my brain and trying to think of a nice present to give her. I could have sent her a birthday cake and flowers. But, nothing of that can express what I feel for her! So I thought of getting creative. Creative is what I am good at, something I derived from my beautiful mom J, so I thought of writing a letter to her.
To Mom,
As I would wake up, and climb downstairs to the kitchen, you would keep my masala chai and breakfast ready! You would then walk fast, with your hands in the air, cooking lunch, doing laundry and watering the garden -all at the same time! Without uttering a word you would carry on the household chores. At noon, you would serve us a delicious lunch and hot ghee laden phulkas. Throughout the day, I would keep asking you to help me with my homework, projects, paintings, writing essays, and organizing my closet etc. I would get irritated, frustrated and would even shout at you when you took time to understand what I was trying to say. You would then patiently handle me and my mood swings and try to bring a smile on my face.
Today, I am married, I have to cook, clean and scrub all by myself and, now I truly realize how hard you worked to keep me happy. I am in awe of your patience and perseverance. To this day, I call you for about everything! How much water do I need to add to the dough? How to bake an eggless cake? Do I use baking powder or baking soda? My head aches and my stomach hurts, what do I do? I can’t imagine passing through the day without having you on my speed dial! I remember the day I left home and went to a hostel in Mumbai to pursue my further studies. Inspite of being scared and worried about my safety, you trusted me and had faith in me; you gave me an opportunity to travel, to live in a rural life as well as an urban one. You taught me to respect everyone, appreciate what you have, believe in myself, dream big and face the difficulties with a big smile!
You have often told me how proud you are of me and how lucky you are to have me as your daughter! But, mom today I want to take this opportunity, on your birthday, to thank you for the immense love and care you have extended to me. I am who I am because of you! You are the kindest, least judgmental, most nurturing person I have ever known. You are the best mom! Wish you joy, good health and happiness on your birthday mom! Happy Birthday!
With love,
Sneha
